Key Points

  • Anthropic has initiated legal proceedings against the Trump administration following its classification as a “supply chain risk” by Pentagon officials
  • This marks an unprecedented instance where an American technology firm has been given this classification, typically assigned to foreign entities
  • The conflict emerged when Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insisted Anthropic eliminate usage limitations on its AI systems for military applications
  • The AI company maintained its position against enabling autonomous lethal weaponry or widespread domestic surveillance capabilities
  • According to company estimates, the Pentagon’s designation threatens to eliminate several billion dollars from projected 2026 earnings

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic, creator of the Claude AI assistant, has initiated legal action against the Trump administration through a California federal courthouse. The legal filing came Monday following the Pentagon’s formal classification of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.”

This classification requires all defense contractors engaged with military operations to verify they are not utilizing Anthropic’s AI technology. This represents a historic first for an American-based technology company receiving such a designation.

The dispute originated from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s insistence that Anthropic eliminate all operational constraints from its artificial intelligence systems. The company refused, maintaining its stance against permitting Claude’s deployment in autonomous lethal military operations or widespread domestic surveillance programs.

These limitations were embedded within Anthropic’s initial agreements with government entities. Company representatives emphasized that Claude has “never been tested” for such military applications and expressed no confidence in the model’s reliability for these purposes.

The company secured a $200 million agreement with the Department of Defense in July 2024. Additionally, Anthropic became the pioneering AI laboratory to implement its technology across the Pentagon’s secure, classified computing infrastructure.

President Trump issued a social media statement instructing all federal departments to “immediately cease” utilizing Anthropic’s AI technology. His statement characterized Anthropic as a “Radical Left AI company.”

Financial Impact

Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s Chief Financial Officer, submitted court documentation stating the administration’s measures could diminish the company’s 2026 revenue “by multiple billions of dollars.” Company officials report that current federal agreements are being terminated.

Commercial sector agreements face similar jeopardy. Company leadership indicates the circumstances threaten “hundreds of millions of dollars” in anticipated short-term earnings.

Anthropic has petitioned the court to nullify the supply chain risk classification and implement a temporary hold during litigation proceedings. The company simultaneously submitted separate filings with the U.S. Court of Appeals located in Washington D.C.

Over a dozen federal departments face naming as defendants, encompassing the Treasury Department, State Department, and General Services Administration.

Industry Support

A coalition exceeding 30 artificial intelligence researchers and technical experts from OpenAI and Google submitted an amicus brief backing Anthropic on Monday. Google’s chief scientist Jeff Dean joined as a signatory.

The coalition cautioned that sanctioning a prominent American AI enterprise could undermine the nation’s competitive standing in artificial intelligence development.

Notwithstanding the blacklist designation, Anthropic’s AI models allegedly continued supporting United States military actions in Iran, based on prior CNBC investigative reporting.

Amazon verified that Anthropic’s Claude remains accessible for AWS client utilization excluding defense-sector applications.

Anthropeutic leadership stated it will maintain pursuit of diplomatic engagement with government officials while simultaneously advancing the legal challenge.

Curve Finance Pitches Yield Basis, a $60M Plan to Turn CRV Tokens Into Income Assets

The post Curve Finance Pitches Yield Basis, a $60M Plan to Turn CRV Tokens Into Income Assets appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Curve Finance founder Michael Egorov unveiled a proposal on the Curve DAO governance forum that would give the decentralized exchange’s token holders a more direct way to earn income. The protocol, called Yield Basis, aims to distribute sustainable returns to CRV holders who stake tokens to participate in governance votes, receiving veCRV tokens in exchange. The plan moves beyond the occasional airdrops that have defined the platform’s token economy to date. Under the proposal, $60 million of Curve’s crvUSD stablecoin will be minted before Yield Basis starts up. Funds from selling the tokens will support three bitcoin-focused pools; WBTC, cbBTC and tBTC, each capped at $10 million. Yield Basis will return between 35% and 65% of its value to veCRV holders, while reserving 25% of Yield Basis tokens for the Curve ecosystem. Voting on the proposal runs from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24. The protocol is designed to attract institutional and professional traders by offering transparent, sustainable bitcoin yields while avoiding the impermanent loss issues common in automated market makers. Diagram showing how compounding leverage can remove risk of impermanent loss (CRV) Impermanent loss occurs when the value of assets locked in a liquidity pool changes compared with holding the assets directly, leaving liquidity providers with fewer gains (or greater losses) once they withdraw. The new protocol comes against a backdrop of financial turbulence for Egorov himself. The Curve founder has suffered several high-profile liquidations in 2024 tied to leveraged CRV purchases. In June, more than $140 million worth of CRV positions were liquidated after Egorov borrowed heavily against the token to support its price. That episode left Curve with $10 million in bad debt. Most recently, in December, Egorov was liquidated for 918,830 CRV (about $882,000) after the token dropped 12% in a single day. He later said on…
