TLDR

  • ChatGPT reached one billion monthly app users in May.
  • Sensor Tower said ChatGPT reached the milestone fastest.
  • Claude usage rose 640% year-over-year, according to estimates.
  • Meta AI usage increased 973% over the same period.
  • BCG found 74% of frontline workers regularly use AI.

Artificial intelligence platforms continue attracting users despite growing concerns about the technology’s long-term effects. New estimates show ChatGPT reached one billion monthly app users in May, setting a new record for adoption speed. Market researchers also reported strong growth across competing AI platforms as demand for generative tools continued rising.

ChatGPT Extends Lead In Expanding AI Market

According to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT reached one billion monthly app users in May. The milestone came about three and a half years after the platform launched in November 2022. Sensor Tower said no other application reached the figure faster. The firm reported that Google Maps previously held the record after reaching the same level in about five years. ChatGPT now remains the largest consumer AI platform by user count.

Sensor Tower also reported continued growth across competing AI applications. Google’s Gemini ranked among the leading alternatives in the market. ByteDance’s Doubao and its overseas version Dola also attracted users. Anthropic’s Claude remained another major competitor in the sector. Together, these platforms expanded access to generative AI services worldwide.

While ChatGPT maintained the largest user base, rivals posted faster growth rates. Sensor Tower estimated Claude’s monthly usage increased 640% from a year earlier. Meta AI recorded year-over-year growth of 973%, according to the firm. ChatGPT’s usage increased 62% during the same period. Researchers said competitors gained users through model improvements and expanding product capabilities.

Public Concerns Persist As Adoption Expands

Public debate around artificial intelligence has intensified in recent months. Technology companies, religious leaders, and educators have raised concerns about the pace of development. Critics have pointed to potential risks involving employment, privacy, and inequality. Some students also voiced concerns during recent university commencement ceremonies. Those concerns emerged as AI tools became more common in workplaces and daily life.

Market researchers observed cases where sentiment influenced platform activity. Sensor Tower reported increased ChatGPT uninstall activity following a major government-related announcement earlier this year. During the same period, Anthropic’s Claude gained momentum among mobile users. Researchers said some consumers considered ethical issues when selecting AI platforms. However, usage trends continued moving higher across the industry.

Boston Consulting Group executive Hanno Stegmann said AI adoption remains strong despite growing debate. “The strong trajectory of AI adoption shows no sign of slowing,” Stegmann said. He added that uncertainty around technological change often affects public perception. Stegmann said many workers view ongoing changes as part of a broader transition. Industry surveys continue showing increased workplace use of AI tools.

Workplace Adoption Continues To Accelerate

A Boston Consulting Group survey released on June 3 examined nearly 12,000 frontline workers. The study found that 74% regularly use artificial intelligence tools. That figure represented a 23-percentage-point increase from the previous year. More than 40% of regular users reported saving the equivalent of one workday weekly. The findings pointed to growing integration across professional environments.

Researchers said AI tools increasingly support routine business tasks. Many organizations now incorporate generative systems into everyday workflows. Companies continue expanding investments in productivity-focused applications. At the same time, software developers are introducing new consumer and enterprise products. Those developments have contributed to continued user growth across the sector.

Long-term projections also remain substantial. The United Nations estimated the global AI market could exceed $4.8 trillion by 2033. Sensor Tower analyst Abe Yousef said consumer usage continues rising despite criticism. “While negative sentiment towards AI is undeniably growing, consumers are increasingly using and relying on these platforms,” Yousef said. Current adoption trends continue supporting expansion across the AI industry.

Frank Sinatra performs on his TV special Frank Sinatra: A Man and his Music Bettmann Archive These days on the Billboard charts, Frank Sinatra’s music can always be found on the jazz-specific rankings. While the art he created when he was still working was pop at the time, and later classified as traditional pop, there is no such list for the latter format in America, and so his throwback projects and cuts appear on jazz lists instead. It’s on those charts where Sinatra rebounds this week, and one of his popular projects returns not to one, but two tallies at the same time, helping him increase the total amount of real estate he owns at the moment. Frank Sinatra’s The World We Knew Returns Sinatra’s The World We Knew is a top performer again, if only on the jazz lists. That set rebounds to No. 15 on the Traditional Jazz Albums chart and comes in at No. 20 on the all-encompassing Jazz Albums ranking after not appearing on either roster just last frame.
