‘Absurd’ to doubt Spain, says De la Fuente after Saudi Arabia rout

ATLANTA: Spain boss Luis de la Fuente said his side had silenced their doubters after Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal inspired a 4-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, La Roja’s World Cup, got off to a slow start as they were held to 0-0 by tournament debutants Cape Verde.

Barcelona superstar Yamal only appeared as a second-half substitute in that match as he is being eased back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.

In his first start for two months, the 18-year-old only played the first half, but that was still enough to tear apart the Saudis and send a message that the European champions remain in contention for a second World Cup.

Yamal opened the scoring from Oyarzabal’s cross for his first World Cup goal on 10 minutes.

Oyarzabal then struck twice in three minutes to take his tally to 14 goals in his last 13 international appearances.

De la Fuente suggested the criticism of Spain’s opening performance was over the top for a side that has still not lost a competitive game for over three years.

“When someone questions your work, it is only human that anyone with courage and pride reacts to prove people wrong,” said De la Fuente.

“We shouldn’t view that criticism as a source of annoyance, but it pushes people to bring out their best.

“My only point is that it needs to be kept in perspective. It strikes me as absurd to doubt this team that has not lost in 33 consecutive games. To doubt this generation? I find that unfair.”

De la Fuente conceded that Yamal could have played for more than 45 minutes had Spain not been in such a commanding position and believes he is in “perfect condition” to lead their quest to win the competition in the coming weeks.

“We had to see how the match unfolded, but today was an important step for what lies ahead,” he added.

“He is in perfect condition now and it’s also good to leave it at that – leaving him hungry for more.”

Unlike Yamal and many of his team-mates, Oyarzabal is not a global star but has been a key part of La Roja’s success since De la Fuente took charge.

The Real Sociedad forward scored the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final against England.

“People who understand football rate him incredibly highly; he has a massive impact on the national team,” said De la Fuente, when asked if Oyarzabal is underrated.

“I want to champion Mikel because he is a player capable of making history for Spanish football.”
