PETALING JAYA: A salesman was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the rotan by the Shah Alam sessions court today after pleading guilty to slashing a motorcyclist on the Federal Highway motorcycle lane last month.
Judge ‘Ainul Bashiirah Dona Don Biyajid ordered Azmi Jantan, 43, to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on June 11, Harian Metro reported.
Azmi was charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to the 45-year-old victim by slashing him with a cleaver at Km14.6 of the Federal Highway’s motorcycle lane, near Section 13, at 8.19am on June 11.
The charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine or whipping.
According to the facts of the case, the victim suffered fractures to his shoulder, arm and left wrist, as well as injuries to his head and face.
Deputy public prosecutor Amir Saifullah Sallehuddin sought a heavy sentence for Azmi, citing the severity of the victim’s injuries.
Azmi, who was unrepresented, sought a lighter sentence, telling the court that he had no dependants and did not know the victim.
