  • Polymarket banned users who threatened an Israeli reporter over Iran missile reporting.
  • Market rules exclude intercepted missiles; bettors pressured Fabian to change his report.
  • The incident shows rising risks of manipulation in prediction markets during geopolitical events.

Polymarket has banned users for issuing death threats against an Israeli reporter to manipulate news on Iranian missile strikes. The Times of Israel’s military correspondent Emanuel Fabian received death threats from Polymarket bettors demanding he change his March 10 report that an Iranian ballistic missile struck an open area near Beit Shemesh, causing no injuries.

Polymarket Bettors Threaten Reporter Over Missile Report

Polymarket released a statement on March 17, 2026, condemning the harassment and death threats against Times of Israel reporter Emanuel Fabian. Fabian had reported on an Iranian missile strike near Beit Shemesh on March 10, 2026, which affected a Polymarket betting contract that generated over $14.5 million in trading volume.

Polymarket’s “Iran strikes Israel on March 10?” market resolved “Yes” if The Times of Israel military correspondent or other credible sources reported a strike on Israeli soil, explicitly excluding intercepted missiles or fragments.

Fabian’s factual report threatened “No” bettors in a market with more than $14 million wagered. Bettors first sent polite email requests for corrections, then escalated with fabricated screenshots claiming Fabian admitted interception and public calls on X to pressure him.

For instance, harassment became violent via WhatsApp from a user named “Haim, with deadlines like March 15, 01:00 Israel time, threats of “damage you have never imagined you would suffer,” and explicit vows such as “after you make us lose $900,000, we will invest no less than that to finish you,” Fabian said.

Fabian stood by his sourced reporting, leading to police investigations, while Polymarket banned the involved accounts and pledged to share details with authorities, highlighting platform accountability amid rising tensions in the Iran-Israel conflicts.

What’s The Impact on Geopolitical Prediction Markets?

This incident exposes vulnerabilities where high-stakes crypto prediction markets intersect with real-world reporting on geopolitical conflicts like 2026 Iran-Israel tensions, potentially incentivizing manipulation or violence against journalists.

In early March 2026, amid escalating U.S., Israel, and Iran strikes, Polymarket shattered records with $478 million in single‑day notional trading volume, with the politics and geopolitics category alone accounting for $220 million.

Iran-focused contracts surged as the “Iran strikes Israel on…?” market generated $20.9 million in total volume, including $20.3 million on the March 10 outcome, while related U.S.–Iran war bets surpassed $529 million across contracts.

This incident has triggered platform-level action and broader scrutiny. Polymarket stated that “Prediction markets depend on the integrity of independent reporting” and that “Attempts to pressure journalists to alter their reporting undermine that integrity and undermine the markets themselves.”

Regulators, including CFTC, are now watching closely for guidance on event-contract manipulation.
