Uber Technologies has revealed plans to introduce Europe’s inaugural commercial autonomous taxi operation in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. This groundbreaking initiative represents a tripartite collaboration involving Uber, China-based autonomous technology provider Pony.ai, and Croatian mobility startup Verne.

Verne — taking its name from renowned French science fiction author Jules Verne — assumes responsibility for fleet ownership and operational management. The company will spearhead European regulatory navigation and coordinate service deployment through both its proprietary application and Uber’s established platform.

Pony.ai provides the technological foundation. The company’s seventh-generation autonomous driving platform will enable the service, operating within the Arcfox Alpha T5 Robotaxi — a vehicle manufactured by Chinese automotive company BAIC incorporating Huawei’s technological systems.

Real-world testing throughout Zagreb has commenced, with revenue-generating passenger services anticipated to launch imminently.

Uber plans to incorporate this autonomous service within its worldwide ride-sharing network, complementing Verne’s standalone customer application. Additionally, Uber is injecting capital into Verne as a strategic stakeholder, facilitating future growth initiatives.

The three partners have articulated ambitious objectives to expand the fleet to thousands of autonomous vehicles in Zagreb, with subsequent rollout planned for additional European metropolitan areas.

Understanding the Share Price Decline

Contrary to what might be expected from such significant news, Uber stock decreased 1.3% to $72.14 during Thursday’s trading session. Pony.ai experienced a more substantial decline — plunging 12.2% to $10.00 — following the release of fourth-quarter financial results revealing gross profit margins that fell short of analyst projections. While revenue reached $29.1 million, marginally surpassing the $28.6 million consensus estimate, this performance failed to compensate for the margin shortfall.

The subdued response from Uber shareholders suggests the market has become accustomed to autonomous vehicle partnership declarations. Uber has established relationships with approximately two dozen self-driving technology firms across various sectors including robo-taxis, autonomous trucking, robotic delivery, and aerial drones.

Pony.ai’s Financial Trajectory

Pony.ai completed its initial public offering in 2024, setting the share price at $13. Current trading levels remain substantially below that IPO valuation. Throughout 2025, the company generated $90 million in revenue while recording an operating deficit of approximately $284 million.

Financial analysts anticipate 2026 revenue will climb to $151 million, with the company aiming to achieve operational profitability by 2029. Projections suggest annual revenue could surge to $1.7 billion by that timeframe — a target requiring fleet expansion from hundreds to tens of thousands of vehicles.

Pony.ai currently maintains commercial robo-taxi operations in Beijing and Shanghai, positioning itself alongside Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla in the competitive global autonomous transportation market.

Europe has trailed behind both the United States and China in autonomous taxi deployment, with most European initiatives remaining in experimental stages. Waymo presently maintains operations spanning 10 American cities.

UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach

The post UK crypto holders brace for FCA’s expanded regulatory reach appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. British crypto holders may soon face a very different landscape as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) moves to expand its regulatory reach in the industry. A new consultation paper outlines how the watchdog intends to apply its rulebook to crypto firms, shaping everything from asset safeguarding to trading platform operation. According to the financial regulator, these proposals would translate into clearer protections for retail investors and stricter oversight of crypto firms. UK FCA plans Until now, UK crypto users mostly encountered the FCA through rules on promotions and anti-money laundering checks. The consultation paper goes much further. It proposes direct oversight of stablecoin issuers, custodians, and crypto-asset trading platforms (CATPs). For investors, that means the wallets, exchanges, and coins they rely on could soon be subject to the same governance and resilience standards as traditional financial institutions. The regulator has also clarified that firms need official authorization before serving customers. This condition should, in theory, reduce the risk of sudden platform failures or unclear accountability. David Geale, the FCA’s executive director of payments and digital finance, said the proposals are designed to strike a balance between innovation and protection. He explained: “We want to develop a sustainable and competitive crypto sector – balancing innovation, market integrity and trust.” Geale noted that while the rules will not eliminate investment risks, they will create consistent standards, helping consumers understand what to expect from registered firms. Why does this matter for crypto holders? The UK regulatory framework shift would provide safer custody of assets, better disclosure of risks, and clearer recourse if something goes wrong. However, the regulator was also frank in its submission, arguing that no rulebook can eliminate the volatility or inherent risks of holding digital assets. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that when consumers choose to invest, they do…
