Yes, you can move crypto from one exchange to another: withdraw it on-chain from the platform you are leaving to a deposit address you copied from the destination, on a network both platforms support, after a small test.
There is no transfer button between exchanges, the network fee is paid once, and you never have to sell.

Key Takeaways
  • Every transfer between exchanges is an on-chain withdrawal to the destination's deposit address, because the free internal-transfer routes exchanges offer only reach their own users.
  • The cheapest way to move USDT is the cheapest network both platforms share, and in September 2026 that was rarely Tron: 1.5 USDT on both platforms whose full schedules we captured, against 0.0035 to 0.01 USDT on BNB Smart Chain or an Ethereum layer two.
  • Moving a coin you intend to keep is not a disposal under HMRC's manual or the IRS's virtual currency FAQs, while converting it first is.
  • On the platforms we have documented, a password or 2FA change locks withdrawals for 24 to 48 hours and a whitelist change for 24 to 72 hours, so make security changes days ahead.
  • MEXC, the example destination in this guide, credits Bitcoin after 2 confirmations, Ethereum after 10 and USDT on ERC-20 after 96, and it does not serve the United States, the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area.
  • A minimum-size test transfer costs one extra network fee and is the only way to prove the address, the network and the memo before the balance moves.

Can You Move Crypto From One Exchange to Another?

Yes, and the mechanism is the same one you use to send crypto anywhere.
The platform you are leaving broadcasts a withdrawal to the blockchain, and the platform you are joining credits the deposit when the chain has confirmed it.
Two things people expect do not exist.
There is no direct link between exchanges, so the address always comes from the destination's deposit page.
And the internal-transfer option that many exchanges offer, free and instant, only reaches accounts on the same platform, which is why it cannot be used to leave.
Nothing about the process requires you to sell.
The coin arrives as the same coin, with your cost basis intact, provided you keep the records described near the end of this guide.
If the reason you are moving is that withdrawals are already failing, you are in a different situation, covered in our guide on how to move assets away from an exchange in distress.

Step 1: Inventory Everything Before You Touch the Withdrawal Form

An exchange account holds more than its spot balance, and the withdrawal form can only see part of it.
On every platform we have documented, some of the balance sits behind open positions, in Earn or staking products, inside bots or copy-trading strategies, or under a hold from a recent deposit.
Where the balance sits
Why the withdrawal form cannot use it
What releases it
Margin behind open positions
It is collateral until the position closes
Close or reduce the positions
Earn, staking or locked products
Locked until redemption or maturity
Redeem, or wait for the term to end
Bots and copy trading
Funds are committed to the strategy
Stop the bot or cancel the copy
A recent deposit
Below the confirmation count that unlocks withdrawals
Wait; the chain sets the pace
A recent security change
Withdrawals locked for 24 to 48 hours on the platforms we documented
Make changes days ahead
A whitelist change
Suspensions of 24 to 72 hours on the platforms we documented
Add the destination address early
Patterns verified as of September 2026 against the official help centers of the platforms covered in our individual migration guides.
Write the list down, with the unlock time for each item, before you decide when moving day is.
A withdrawal you start with a security lock still running will simply wait, and the platforms we have documented do not lift those locks early.

Step 2: Decide What Moves and What You Sell First

This is the step most guides skip, and it decides both your tax position and your fee bill.
Move the coins you intend to keep as they are.
HMRC's manual states that there is no disposal when you keep beneficial ownership, and the IRS's virtual currency FAQs treat a transfer between wallets or accounts that both belong to you as a non-taxable event.
Converting a coin to a stablecoin before you move it is a sale in both frameworks, and it costs a spread or a trading fee on top.
Convert only what you would have sold anyway.
Small tokens need one more check: the destination has to list the token, and the contract address on its deposit page has to match the one the source shows, because MEXC's support guide says a token whose contract address differs from the one it supports is not credited.
Coins that use a memo or tag, such as XRP and assets on the TON network, travel fast but only with the memo copied exactly from the deposit page.

Step 3: Set Up the Destination First

The withdrawal form asks for an address before it asks for anything else, so the new account has to exist before the old one does any work.
We run MEXC, so it is the worked example, and the same checks apply to any destination.
One thing first: MEXC's User Agreement lists the United States and the United Kingdom as prohibited jurisdictions, and MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation for the European Economic Area.
If you live in one of those places, the example still shows what a destination should give you, and yours should be a platform licensed to serve you.
On MEXC, go to Wallets, then Deposit, then On-Chain Deposit, choose the coin and the network, and copy the address, as set out in MEXC's guide on how to deposit crypto on the web.
Copy the memo as well if the deposit page shows one.
Note every network the deposit page accepts for your coin, because that list is half of the cheapest-route decision in the next section.
For USDT, MEXC has accepted deposits on the TON network since April 2024, alongside Tron, Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana.
Use an ordinary send from the source, because MEXC's deposit guide says transfers made through a smart contract may not be credited automatically.

What the move buys you on MEXC

A withdrawal fee is paid once, and on the right network it is a cent.
A trading fee is paid on every fill, for as long as you stay where you are.
MEXC's fee page lists spot trading at 0.0000% for makers and 0.0500% for takers, and the BTCUSDT perpetual at 0.000% for makers and 0.020% for takers, as of September 10, 2026.
Put a year of orders against that.

Data verified against MEXC's fee page as of September 10, 2026; the comparison column uses the 0.100% spot and 0.0500% perpetual taker rates that the entry tiers of the large exchanges in our platform guides published in September 2026; each figure is monthly volume multiplied by the rate and by 12.
The trader who gains most is the one who rests limit orders, because a maker order costs nothing on the MEXC schedule.
The limits belong here too.
MEXC futures rates are pair-specific, with standard-tier pairs at 0.010% for makers and 0.040% for takers, and orders sent through the MEXC API follow a separate futures schedule of 0.06% maker and 0.08% taker, which is above the entry tiers of the large exchanges we have documented.
Our crypto exchange fee index shows how each platform's schedule compares, and our tracker of futures fee schedules across exchanges covers derivatives.
On reserves, MEXC publishes Proof of Reserves with Merkle tree verification, and our guide to exchanges that publish proof of reserves explains how to check any platform's claim.
If you live outside the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area and the other restricted jurisdictions, and trading cost is why you are switching, open the MEXC account now and come back to this page with the deposit address in hand.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Transfer Crypto Between Exchanges?

The cheapest way is the cheapest network that both platforms support for the coin you are moving, and on most days that is not the network people reach for by habit.
Almost every exchange charges a fixed withdrawal fee per coin and per network, set by the platform rather than by the chain at that moment.
The fee is charged by the platform you leave, once, so the whole cost of the move is that number plus the fee on your test transfer.
Here is what one USDT withdrawal cost in September 2026 on the two large exchanges whose full fee schedules we captured for our platform guides.
Network
USDT withdrawal fee, September 2026
Share of a 1,000 USDT transfer
Tron (TRC20)
1.5 USDT on both platforms
0.15%
Ethereum (ERC20)
0.3 and 0.4 USDT
0.03% to 0.04%
Solana
0.29 and 0.3 USDT
about 0.03%
Polygon
0.01 and 0.07 USDT
0.001% to 0.007%
Arbitrum One
0.0035 and 0.1 USDT
0.00035% to 0.01%
BNB Smart Chain (BEP20)
0.01 USDT on the one platform that listed it
0.00%
Snapshots of two exchanges' official withdrawal fee pages dated September 7 and September 9, 2026, as verified for our individual platform guides; fees change, so read the live figure in the withdrawal form before you send.
Tron was the most expensive route on both schedules, at 150 times the cost of BNB Smart Chain on the platform that offered both.
The same pattern held on MEXC's own withdrawal schedule, which matters for the day you ever move out again: as of August 19, 2026, USDT cost 1 USDT to withdraw on Tron and 0.01 USDT on BNB Smart Chain, as documented in our guide to which exchanges charge the least to withdraw.
Cheap only counts inside the overlap.
List the networks the source offers in its withdrawal form, list the networks the destination shows on its deposit page, cross out everything that is not on both, and take the cheapest of what is left.
Addresses beginning with 0x look identical on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Arbitrum, so the address will never warn you that you picked the wrong one.
Our guide to USDT networks compared explains how the chains differ.

What Is the Best Crypto to Transfer Between Exchanges?

For a pure transfer, a stablecoin on a low-fee network is the usual answer, because its value does not move while the chain confirms and its fee on the right network is a fraction of a cent.
That answer only applies to money you were going to hold as a stablecoin anyway.
If you hold Bitcoin, Ether or an altcoin you intend to keep, the best crypto to transfer is that coin, moved as it is, for the tax and spread reasons in Step 2.
Speed then depends on the destination's confirmation rules more than on the coin.
MEXC credits Bitcoin after 2 block confirmations, Ethereum after 10 and USDT on ERC-20 after 96 network confirmations, according to the MEXC deposit and withdrawal guide, so a stablecoin sent on Ethereum can take longer to credit than the coin you might have moved instead.
Two coin types deserve a caution.
Memo coins such as XRP arrive within minutes but only with the memo, and a missing memo is one of the causes MEXC's support guide lists for a deposit that needs manual recovery.
Small tokens can trade on both platforms and still be issued on different chains, which is why the contract-address check in Step 2 exists.

Steps 4 to 8: How to Transfer Crypto Between Exchanges

Step 4: Unlock and consolidate.
Close positions, redeem products, stop bots, and bring the balance to the wallet the withdrawal form draws from, with no security changes on the day.
Step 5: Pick the network from the overlap.
Use the deposit page on the destination and the withdrawal form on the source, never a forum answer, and take the cheapest network on both lists.
Step 6: Send a test.
Withdraw the minimum the form allows to the pasted address, compare the first and last six characters with the source, add the memo if there is one, and wait for it to credit.
Step 7: Send the balance.
Repeat the same address, network and memo, and choose the amount setting that leaves the recipient with what you intend, since some forms add the fee on top and others deduct it.
Step 8: Keep the records.
Export your trade, deposit and withdrawal history from the old platform before you close it, and save each transaction ID beside it.
Your purchase prices live in that history, and it gets harder to retrieve once an account is restricted or closed.
Ready to move, and eligible where you live?

How Long Does a Transfer Between Exchanges Take?

Three clocks run in sequence, and only the middle one is the blockchain.
The first is the source's processing: on the platforms we have documented, a transaction ID typically appears within 15 to 60 minutes of the request, and processing can stretch to two or three hours when queues are long.
The second is confirmation on the chain, which depends on the network and its traffic.
The third is the destination's crediting rule, which is why the same USDT can credit in minutes on one network and take most of an hour on Ethereum's 96-confirmation count at MEXC.
Deposit holds, allowlist waits and security locks are not part of the transfer at all, and they are what turn an hour into days, which is why Step 1 comes first.
To follow a deposit on MEXC, open Wallets, then Funding History, then Deposit, and use the TxID link to the block explorer.

What Goes Wrong, and How Each Problem Is Fixed

The wrong network.
The chain confirms it and the destination cannot see it; on MEXC the route is an Uncredited Deposit Return Application, typically reviewed in 1 to 2 business days.
A missing memo.
The funds reach the platform's wallet without the tag that identifies your account, and the same application applies.
A contract mismatch.
The destination does not credit a token whose contract address differs from the one it supports, so compare the two before sending anything that is not a major coin.
The internal-transfer route.
If the source offered to send to one of its own users for free and you picked it, the funds went to an account on that platform, not to your new exchange.
A lock you started yourself.
A password reset, a 2FA change or a whitelist edit on moving day means waiting out the timer, because the platforms we documented do not shorten it.
Fake support.
The FBI has warned about scammers who impersonate cryptocurrency exchange employees, and no genuine agent needs your password, your codes or your recovery phrase.
The full list of reasons a confirmed deposit is not credited on MEXC is in its troubleshooting guide for deposits that are not credited.

Every Platform Has One Trap of Its Own

The eight steps are the same everywhere, but each exchange adds a rule that catches its own users, and we document them platform by platform.
When a platform is in the news for the wrong reasons, our exchange hack history database shows how past incidents were resolved and how often users were repaid.

Can You Do This From Your Country?

United States.
MEXC's User Agreement lists the United States as a prohibited jurisdiction, so the steps apply but the destination should be a platform registered with FinCEN and licensed in your state.
United Kingdom.
MEXC's User Agreement lists the United Kingdom as a prohibited jurisdiction, so UK readers should look to firms authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
European Economic Area.
MiCA's transitional period expired across the EU on July 1, 2026, and some platforms stopped serving EU customers that day, as our explainer on what changed for EU accounts on July 1, 2026 sets out.
MEXC is not the destination for EEA readers: it does not hold a MiCA authorisation and appears on ESMA's register of non-compliant entities following a decision by the Dutch AFM in September 2025.
MEXC is also leaving the Netherlands, with offboarding running to October 31, 2026 and final offboarding on November 16, 2026.
Japan.
Japan does not appear among the prohibited jurisdictions in MEXC's User Agreement, but the MEXC apps cannot be downloaded from Japanese iOS or Android stores, per MEXC's own restricted regions article.
MEXC appears on the Financial Services Agency's list of unregistered operators, with entries in March 2023 and November 2024.
Elsewhere.
Check the restricted regions article before opening an account, and use only platforms that serve your jurisdiction.

The MEXC View

We run an exchange, so we gain when a reader finishes this guide with a deposit on MEXC, and you should weigh the page with that in mind.
The large exchanges we have documented publish good withdrawal tooling: automatic network detection, tools to check whether a receiving platform supports a network, safety prompts on a first send to a new address, and whitelist timers that we would tell anyone to switch on.
Their liquidity is a real reason to keep an account open even after you move most of your trading.
Our case is narrow and checkable: a maker order that costs 0.100% at the entry tier of those platforms costs nothing on our standard spot schedule, and the cheapest USDT route into MEXC cost 0.01 USDT on the schedules we captured.
How we weigh claims like these is set out in our methodology for reviewing exchanges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you move crypto from one exchange to another?
Yes, by withdrawing on-chain from the platform you are leaving to a deposit address copied from the destination, on a network both support.
You never have to sell.

How do I transfer crypto between exchanges?
Copy the deposit address and memo from the destination, choose the same network in the source's withdrawal form, send a small test, then the balance.
Keep the transaction IDs.

What is the cheapest way to transfer crypto between exchanges?
Use the cheapest network both platforms share; for USDT in September 2026 that was BNB Smart Chain or an Ethereum layer two at 0.0035 to 0.01 USDT, not Tron at 1.5 USDT.
Check the live fee before you send.

What is the best crypto to transfer between exchanges?
For money you would hold as a stablecoin anyway, a stablecoin on a low-fee network.
For anything you intend to keep, the coin itself, moved as it is.

Do I have to sell my crypto to switch exchanges?
No, an on-chain withdrawal moves the same coin to the new account.
A move between your own accounts is not a disposal under HMRC's manual or the IRS's FAQs, while a conversion is.

How long does a transfer between exchanges take?
On the platforms we documented, a transaction ID typically appears within 15 to 60 minutes, and the destination then applies its own confirmation count.
Holds and security locks are what add days.

Is transferring crypto between exchanges taxable?
Moving a coin between accounts you own is a non-taxable event under HMRC's manual and the IRS's virtual currency FAQs.
Converting it first is a sale, and rules differ elsewhere.

Why can't I withdraw right after changing my password?
Exchanges lock withdrawals after security changes, for 24 to 48 hours on the platforms we documented.
Whitelist changes can add 24 to 72 hours, and neither lock is lifted early.

How do I move crypto to MEXC?
Copy an address from Wallets, Deposit and On-Chain Deposit on MEXC, then withdraw from your current platform on the same network.
MEXC does not serve the United States, the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area.

Risk and Compliance

On-chain transfers are irreversible, and funds sent to a wrong address, an unsupported network or an unsupported contract may be permanently unrecoverable.
Futures and perpetual contracts use leverage, and losses can exceed anything a lower fee returns.
Fees, limits, supported networks and regional availability change without notice, so confirm every figure inside the platform at the time you transfer.
Check whether a platform serves your jurisdiction before opening an account, and do not use tools to bypass geographic restrictions.
